It's a technique I use quite often. If I'm approaching an intersection when a car driver is turning left across my path, I find it very useful to weave left and right maybe a foot or so. The sideways movement does seem to work at catching the driver's eye.
It always works well when being tailgated by a car; the driver doesn't know what to think if you weave slightly in the lane and will usually back off.
